Window Types

Windows do much more then bring light in to a room.

They add architectural elements to rooms and can truly change a rooms shape and feel while allowing for proper ventilation. To serve varying needs windows come in a wide array of types and sizes, each with different functions.

Fixed or operable; what does this mean?

Windows can be either fixed or operable. Fixed windows are windows used purely for the fantastic light and views they provided and do not open for ventilation. Usually a window with a unique shape is fixed, as are picture windows.
Operable windows are windows that slide up or down, or hinge outward or inward. These windows not only look great and add style to a room but aid in the homes ventilation.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are designed to provide light and breeze. They’re great for bedrooms and other areas that need to maintain privacy but still let some light in. Awnings can be opened slightly to allow ventilation. They can be positioned in a variety of places; next to other windows, arranged columns, or placed above large patio doors to create a wall of light and fresh air.

Bay Windows

Bay windows bring a fabulous architectural element to a room, while creating an n open and peaceful feeling ion doors. A bay window has multiple views that allow the light to come in at different angles. The sides are usually operable, so it can be opened for air circulation. Replacing a flat window with a bay changes the whole composition of a room, not only adding style but making the room appear larger. Bays are primarily used for kitchens but they can also add character to family rooms and master bedrooms.

Like bay windows bow project out and add a considerable amount of character and style to a room. Yet, bays have more than three sections that join to form a gentle curve. The center panels are normally fixed, while the side sashes are typically casement windows. Like bays, bow windows can be used in any room you would like to add some extra light, ventilation, and style, especially good in kitchens, family rooms, and bedrooms.

Casement windows open outward for light, fresh air and cool breezes. They’re tightly sealed for energy efficiency and great for hard to reach places, such as over sinks and appliances in the kitchen.

Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows are chosen for their unique style, ease of access and superior ventilation capabilities. The top of the window can be opened while the bottom remains closed- fantastic for kid’s rooms! Certain types of these the sash can be removed, rotated or tilted for easy cleaning. Double hung windows can go practically anywhere in your home. They’re the perfect fit for bedrooms, kitchens, and offices.

Dormer Windows

Dormer windows give excellent light and air flow while increasing living space and giving more head room in small spaces. Making them an excellent choice for attics and tight spaces. Dormers also increase architectural appeal and therefore curb appeal.

Hopper windows

The hopper window is basically a casement window flipped on its side. The entire pane tilts inward to open allowing for maximum ventilation. These windows are most often installed in basements, above doors or over other windows.

Horizontal Slider

Horizontal sliders are windows that may have one or more fixed panels in addition to one or more panels that slide in horizontal tracks. Only one half of the total window may be opened at a time.
What type of rooms and why?

Glass Block windows

These fixed windows are an alternative to traditional windows. They can be used for exterior windows or interiors. You can use various patterns to gain style and varying degrees of privacy. These e windows are typically used in basements and bathrooms.

Jalousie Windows

Jalousie Window

Jalousie windows are also called louvered windows. They are windows that look like glass shutter, because the windows are made of glass slats that can open and shut in unison. The unique feature of the jalousie allows you to control the degree of light and air that passes through. Jalousie windows are popular for basement windows or in bathrooms and are suited for temperate climates because they cannot be sealed making it difficult to keep heat or a/c in and the extreme weather out.

Picture windows

Picture windows create unobstructed views of the outdoors. Yet because they are fixed, they are best in areas where ventilation isn’t a big concern. Great areas for picture windows are in dark rooms or hallways to improve the lighting. Picture windows when used in combinations with patio doors or with open and closed (operable) windows bring the perfect balance to a room.

Round top window

Round Top Window

Round top are windows that are geometrically shaped and are used as architectural accents to add light and style. These windows are fixed and are usually put over doors or other windows.

Single Hung Windows

Just like double hung windows, single casements are classic in appearance and shape offer, excellent ventilation. Yet, a single casement has only one sash the slides for air circulation.
